An alleged commercial burglar in the region is behind bars after he forgot to cover his tracks, literally.
Police in Albany were called at around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7 for a burglary in progress at the Stop 1 Deli & Grocery on Second Avenue.
By the time officers arrived, the culprit had fled with the store’s cash register.
A witness told police that he confronted the man after seeing him leave the store, but the man pulled out a knife and attempted to stab him before running away.
Unfortunately for the suspect, the burglary occurred in the middle of the region’s first winter storm of the season, which dumped over five inches of snow on the city.
Detectives simply followed footprints left in the snow to a home near Krank Street and Seymore Avenue, where they located and arrested 46-year-old Henry Villalongo.
During his arrest, police reportedly found a pocketknife, a flashlight, and a screwdriver.
Villalongo was charged with the following:
- Robbery
- Burglary
- Possession of burglar’s tools
- Criminal possession of a weapon
- Obstructing governmental administration
He was taken to the Albany County jail following his arraignment.
